Kay completed professional training in Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction at the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society.  Kay has facilitated mindfulness-based programs for Emory Continuing Education as a mindfulness educator and MBSR consultant for their Integrative Health Coaching Certification course. Additionally, she has led mindfulness groups for various research teams at Emory including work with chronic kidney disease patients and veterans with PTSD.  Kay has also led mindfulness retreats and trainings for faculty and students at Middlebury College, and for various pastor and church groups.

Kay is also a Courage to Teach Teacher Leader Fellow as part of a 2012 pilot program of Still Learning, Inc. and the national Courage in Schools movement.  Grounded in mindfulness and self-reflection, Kay’s programs and retreats are informed by the work of Parker Palmer and the Center for Courage and Renewal.

Kay Stewart, M.Ed., joined our team and also founded Stillwaters Mindfulness Training after completing graduate studies in Mindfulness and Contemplative Education in May, 2013. For more than 26 years, Kay served on the faculty in the Department of Health and Physical Education at Emory University. Her passion for cultivating health and well-being in individuals and communities began in 1979 after losing both her parents to chronic disease early in their life.

The ever-increasing pace of life coupled with increasing levels of stress and anxiety, especially among college students, led Kay to develop an undergraduate course at Emory entitled Wellness: An Inside/Out Approach. Teaching this course inspired Kay’s graduate study, and seeded her professional commitment to teaching mindfulness and other evidence-based contemplative practices.  Kay’s inside/out approach integrates mind, body, heart, and soul, and this approach is evident in her mindfulness-based programs grounded in spiritual health, compassion and mind renewal.

Kay and her husband, Davis,  have three grown children, and they are now enjoying the indescribable gift of grandparenting. Kay and Davis are long time members of the Shallowford community, and have both served as elders at Shallowford Presbyterian Church.  Kay is an active community volunteer, and a member of 1999 Class of Leadership Georgia.  Kay has received recognition for both her service and her teaching, and she is passionate about living well, serving others, and having fun along the way.
